Currently, spindle motor power supplies are typically based on large transistors, typically bipolar, that generate large I-V or I-V/f (freq) ripples in power supply waveforms. These ripples result in increased switching losses in the transistor devices, which is significant in terms of power dissipation. Furthermore, the large capacitance of the bipolar transistor makes it inherently unsuitable for use in a pulse width modulated (PWM) power supply.
